Kary Miller Brings an Operations-First Perspective to Workforce Technology
Drawing on experience across healthcare staffing, payroll, scheduling, registration, and frontline administration, Kary Miller helps organizations approach workforce technology through the realities of daily operations.
For Kary Miller, workforce technology is inseparable from the people and processes it supports. Her perspective was shaped through hands-on healthcare experience spanning switchboard operations, registration, ward administration, staffing, and payroll. Today, as Owner of Human Edge Advisory Inc, she applies that operational understanding to Human Capital Management and Workforce Management consulting, with a focus on helping organizations simplify complex systems and make technology more practical for everyday users.
Experience Built Across Healthcare Operations
Kary began working in healthcare in 1994. Over the course of her career within the sector, she held several roles that offered distinct views of how a healthcare organization functions. Her work included serving on the switchboard, working as a registration clerk and floor ward clerk, and contributing in the staffing office. She also worked in payroll and brought an accounting background to responsibilities involving workforce administration.
That range of experience gave Kary direct exposure to the connections among staffing decisions, employee records, schedules, timekeeping, and pay. Each function has its own requirements, but the work must ultimately align across teams. A scheduling decision can affect time records, payroll processing, staffing coverage, and the experience of employees using the system. Understanding those relationships became especially important as her responsibilities expanded.
Kary later managed a hospital staffing team. Before retiring from that role, she was directly involved in implementing UKG workforce software. Her participation extended from the initial business structure and configuration through testing, training, and rollout. Because she understood the day-to-day work of both staffing and payroll, she could focus on how the system’s setup would affect the teams expected to use it.
Connecting Configuration With Daily Work
Technology implementations can involve detailed configuration choices, but Kary’s approach keeps operational needs in view. Her consulting work encompasses UKG implementation and optimization, payroll, scheduling, timekeeping, and broader workforce operations. Healthcare remains a particular area of focus, reflecting the environment in which she developed her practical experience.
Most recently, Kary completed a full UKG rebuild with Temiskaming Hospital. The work addressed the solution from its foundational business structure through day-to-day operations. It included restructuring the system to better support the organization, improving scheduling and timekeeping processes, and aligning system access and configuration. She also supported the team through testing, training, migration, and go-live.
This type of work illustrates the importance of treating a workforce platform as more than a technical installation. Foundational structures influence how information moves through a system, while access settings and configuration choices shape what users can see and do. Testing and training then help teams prepare to work within the updated environment before and after launch.
Finding Practical Opportunities for Improvement
Kary has also assisted Cambridge Memorial Hospital with optimizing its UKG solution. That work included using Schedule Tags to improve automation and implementing processes for historical corrections. These details reflect her interest in identifying focused changes that can make established systems work more effectively for operational teams.
Her earlier implementation experience at Georgian Bay General Hospital provides another dimension to that work. While managing the staffing team, she was involved throughout the UKG project, from early structure and configuration to testing, training, and rollout. That combination of leadership and direct system involvement allowed her to consider both implementation requirements and the practical realities facing staff.
Keeping People at the Center
Across these projects, Kary’s emphasis is on helping organizations understand and use workforce technology more effectively. She draws on lessons gained from direct participation rather than viewing scheduling, payroll, or timekeeping as isolated functions. Her background supports an approach that considers how configuration decisions reach the employees, managers, and operational teams using the platform each day.
Through Human Edge Advisory Inc, Kary continues to share practical experience from implementations, rebuilds, and optimization initiatives. Her career path—from frontline administrative roles to staffing leadership and consulting—demonstrates how detailed operational knowledge can inform technology decisions. It also reinforces a central theme in her work: systems are most useful when they reflect the needs of the people and processes behind them.
