Iris Davis, IFBB Pro
Iris Davis, IFBB Pro, is an internationally recognized professional bodybuilder, fitness champion, personal trainer, and longtime advocate for strength, health, and active living at every age. Born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1944, Iris grew up as one of 14 children in a large family with modest means. Her early life taught her resilience, independence, and determination, qualities that would later become defining characteristics of both her personal journey and her athletic career.
Iris became a mother at 17 and experienced profound personal loss early in life, including the death of her first son. At 22, following the death of her husband shortly after the birth of their second son, she faced the challenge of rebuilding her life as a young single mother. Rather than allowing those circumstances to define her future, Iris focused on moving forward. Walking became an important part of her journey, eventually leading her to seek a new beginning in the United States.
At 22, Iris moved to Massachusetts to work as a nanny for a physician and his four children. She spent five years caring for the family while raising her own son and maintaining an active lifestyle through walking and bicycling. When her son reached kindergarten age, Iris began working at MIT. Despite having left school at 14 and having no formal writing experience, she established herself at MIT and eventually worked as a writer for Technology Review, demonstrating the determination and willingness to learn that have characterized her life.
Iris discovered competitive bodybuilding later in life, entering her first competition at age 50 at a time when opportunities for female bodybuilders were considerably more limited than they are today. In her first competition, she was the only woman on stage and competed alongside five men, all significantly younger than she was. She ultimately placed second, an experience that ignited a passion for competitive bodybuilding that would continue for decades.
After moving to Florida, Iris stepped away from competition for several years before returning to the stage at age 57. She became the oldest woman in many of the competitions she entered and went on to achieve numerous first-place finishes. Her competitive accomplishments include 15 first-place NPC titles, as well as recognition as the Fittest Senior in the USA in 2006 at age 62, an honor presented by Nintendo.
Iris later returned to competitive bodybuilding at age 76 and continued breaking new ground. In 2021, she earned her IFBB Pro status after winning a national competition in Pittsburgh, becoming recognized as the oldest IFBB Pro in the United States. She has competed in 17 professional shows and has continued to demonstrate that competitive achievement does not have to be limited by age.
Her accomplishments have also been recognized beyond the bodybuilding stage. In 2020, Iris received the Pioneer Award from the World Women Leadership Congress in Mumbai for her contributions to fitness. She has been featured in media and fitness publications and has participated in interviews, podcasts, speaking engagements, and other fitness features.
Iris has also dedicated herself to helping others become stronger and healthier. A longtime personal trainer and mentor, she encourages people of different ages and backgrounds to embrace movement, develop discipline, and recognize their own potential. At age 75, she opened her own gym, creating another avenue through which she could share her knowledge and passion for fitness with others.
Now in her 80s, Iris continues to train and work as a fitness professional. She maintains a daily commitment to exercise, often training for at least an hour and sometimes for several hours a day. Her longevity in the sport, combined with her willingness to continue challenging herself, has made her a distinctive figure in the world of senior fitness and bodybuilding.
Iris Davis’s story is ultimately about far more than bodybuilding. From growing up in a large Irish family and overcoming profound personal adversity to becoming a professional athlete, entrepreneur, trainer, and mentor, she has repeatedly demonstrated the value of perseverance and reinvention. Her philosophy is simple: age does not have to determine what a person can accomplish. Through consistency, movement, self-motivation, and a willingness to pursue new goals, Iris continues to encourage others to discover what they are capable of at every stage of life.
With decades of dedication to bodybuilding and fitness, numerous competitive accomplishments, and a career devoted to encouraging others, Iris Davis continues to be an example of strength, perseverance, and lifelong commitment to personal achievement.
