Biography

Mariam Mir is an accomplished epidemiologist with 15+ years of experience with applied epidemiology & research. She holds a Master of Science degree in Public Health & Microbiology of Emerging Infectious Diseases from the George Washington School of Public Health in Washington, DC. She obtained her certification in Public health (CPH) credentials in 2016 from the National Board of Public Health Examiners (NBPHE). Mariam has worked as an epidemiologist in a variety of settings, including but not limited to the pharmaceutical industry, academia, public health, ministries of health and most recently as an infection control epidemiologist in the hospital & healthcare setting. She is focused on improving patient safety and health outcomes through infection prevention & control and has specialized expertise in the area of infectious diseases combined with knowledge of public health, infectious disease control, vaccines, outbreak investigation and surveillance. Recent achievements include healthcare facility preparedness for high consequence infectious diseases (e.g., COVID-19 Pandemic, Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) & Ebola virus disease (EVD). Mariam is passionate about bioethics and served as a methodologist expert on their hospital’s research ethics board; committed to ensuring research at their facility meets the highest ethical and scientific standards. She also has extensive methodological experience in the design, implementation & analysis of observational longitudinal studies with primary and secondary data. She received her Institute for Better Health (IBH) faculty appointment as an IBH Investigator in August 2018 in recognition of her leadership with research initiatives at the hospital. Mariam is also an advocate for evidence-informed health care. She obtained her Cochrane Standard Author Training Certificate from Cochrane Canada in December 2013. Her research expertise includes systematic reviews (or knowledge synthesis), meta-analyses & rapid reviews. Mariam has conducted knowledge synthesis at the international (Pan American World Health Organization (PAHO), national (National Advisory Committee on Immunization), provincial (Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-term Care), and local (hospital & healthcare) levels. She has conducted systematic literature reviews using RevMan 5 and most recently the DistillerSR software and produced a variety of knowledge translation products through knowledge synthesis such as patient decision aids, policy briefs, and clinical practice guidelines to aid decision makers. Since the onset of COVID-19 pandemic (January 2020), Mariam has produced weekly epidemiological research summaries (perform extensive literature reviews, summarize and critically appraise available epidemiologic literature on: COVID-19 demographic & clinical characteristics, populations at risk, risk factors for severe disease; ventilator mortality, viral kinetics & dynamics; role of immune/complement system in viral pathogenesis, long COVID/Post COVID-19 sequelae & COVID-19 vaccine effectiveness & safety updates.
