Armed with a wealth of academic achievements, including a Bachelor's Degree in Judiciary Systems/Criminology and a Master's Degree in Criminal Justice, both earned from respected institutions in Puerto Rico, Vanessa began her illustrious career as a Contact Fraud Analyst with the Postal Inspectors on May 1998 and continues her career as a Senior Special Agent with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) in 2002. In 2012, Vanessa's expertise in child exploitation investigations became evident when she identified gaps in the existing system. Recognizing the critical time lapses between device seizures and offender arrests, Vanessa recommended policy changes to the U.S. Attorney's Office, resulting in a groundbreaking approach to reviewing and acting upon collected evidence immediately. This initiative significantly increased arrests, search and seizures, prosecutions, and convictions. Throughout her career, Vanessa demonstrated her commitment to international justice. In 2014, she conducted an investigation in collaboration with HSI Bogota, successfully intercepting an individual planning illegal activities in Medellin, Colombia. Her meticulous planning and execution led to the arrest, prosecution, and conviction of the offender, who received a 12-year imprisonment sentence. Vanessa's exceptional achievements were recognized in 2015 when she received the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Executive Assistant Director’s (EAD) Award for Outstanding Investigative Accomplishments. The impact of her work reached even broader audiences with the production of a documentary titled "The Abolitionist." In 2016, Vanessa showcased her leadership skills during a multi-agency undercover operation in Colombia. Her ability to navigate challenges and coordinate with Colombian authorities resulted in the successful rescue of two minors and the arrest of three individuals involved in child exploitation. Beyond her exemplary investigative work, Vanessa pioneered the ARMOR program in SAC Miami in 2018, focusing on the well-being of agents handling child exploitation cases. Her dedication to supporting her colleagues extended to becoming a peer support member and later the SAC Miami Peer Support Program Coordinator, actively involved in workplace events involving stressful situations. Vanessa's extensive career also included stints as an acting group supervisor, where she supervised investigations, conducted performance appraisals, and secured funding for critical operations. Her leadership extended to close collaborations with various departments, including Mission Support and the Office of the Principle Legal Advisor. In 2022, Vanessa's expertise was recognized globally when she was invited by HSI Buenos Aires as a subject matter expert to conduct training in Cordoba, Argentina, covering topics such as UC online strategies, Peer-to-Peer initiatives, case studies, and ARMOR initiatives.
