Biography
Michela G. Maccabruni is a passionate anthropologist, activist, and NGO leader. She is the Executive Director and co-founder of Mercy Hands Europe, an international non-governmental organization based in Switzerland. Michela's leadership extends from the organization's headquarters in Geneva to coordinating the efforts of field staff and local partners in Iraq, Syria, Ethiopia, Georgia, and Ukraine. With a strong commitment to gender and women's equality, empowerment, and sustainability, Michela has spearheaded projects in various sectors, including emergency, education, agriculture, protection, and arts. These projects have included initiatives such as IT and coding classes for girls, promoting agriculture as a livelihood opportunity, and strengthening the rule of law as a tool for peacebuilding. She has also facilitated activities focused on mental health, psychotherapy, art, music, and sports for social cohesion in different regions. Michela's coordination efforts involve partners and stakeholders from around the world, and she actively engages with international networks and organizations to advocate for vulnerable populations. Fluent in Italian, English, French, and Spanish, she is also dedicated to learning Arabic to better connect with the communities she serves. Michela's mission is to promote self-worth and independence among vulnerable individuals through livelihood activities, believing that economic empowerment is the foundation for mental freedom and human equality. Her academic background in Anthropology and Cultural Studies, along with a master's degree in Anthropology & Development, has provided her with a solid foundation for her work in the humanitarian sector. Driven by her belief in personal growth alongside professional development, Michela continuously seeks knowledge and improvement. She has pursued additional certifications in areas such as monitoring and evaluation, project management, and managing gender-based violence in emergencies. Michela's motto is, "Knowledge and constant self-improvement lead to new opportunities and greater freedom." She credits her success to her unwavering focus, drive, and perseverance.
